Now that the summer transfer window should be getting into full swing after the World Cup final on Sunday, I can not help but think that this is another year where we should buy only two or three players that are going to make that difference to our squad. I have seen many a transfer window where we would go out and buy 7 or 8 players, some of whom are unchallenged in the Premier League, spending millions and millions and fail to have a successful season. Buying too many players upsets the balance of the team. The team takes time to gel, and that is something that just can't happen at the start of a Premier League season. To have a successful season you need to start with a bang. Take our previous season. Harry bought Peter Crouch, Sebastien Bassong and Niko Kranjcar, also buying Kyle Naughton and Walker which added to the younger side of our squad. We won our first four games and finished fourth for the first time in the Premier League. Harry knew that we allready had a strong side from the form we showed at the end of the 2008/2009 season. He knew all we needed was a small bit more to turn us from a good team, into a very good team. And he was right.

This year is no different. I believe that we have a strong squad as it is, proved from finishing fourth last year, however I also believe that we need to make a few additions to our side if we are to keep up with the ever increasing tightness of the Premier League. We have the chance now to make it to the group stages of the Champions League. What an achievement that would be. I have no doubts over our chances of making it to the group stages and getting past the qualifying round, but I would like to have squad capable of having a good run in the Champions League. And I believe that only a few more signings would make that possible.

There are many names being fired around at us now, some good, some bad. I usually pay no attention to these rumours but if some of them became a reality, I would have no problems with them. Two weeks ago, Palermo made a statement that we had put in a £28million bid for Danish centre half Simon Kjaer and Uraguayan playmaker Edison Cavani. I thought brilliant, two players who have performed very well recently and who look very, very good. Also for a great price. Unfortunately Spurs issued a statement denying a bid was made, and I was quite dissapointed as these are two players who I believe would make that difference to our squad. Then again, we are a club who say nothing until a deal has officially been done, so you never know with Tottenham Hotspur. Another player who was linked was Micah Richards. One who I would not mind being in our team but only if we could not get Kjaer. Craig Bellamy, Luis Suarez, Michel Bastos all being linked also. Diego Forlan of Atletico Madrid was a player who we openly admitted interested in. However he looks set to stay in Spain now and I am a bit relieved as £20million for a 31 year old seemed a bit much to me. I am not doubting his ability for one moment but I feel we could spend that money on someone younger. Then, there is Joe Cole who we held talks with. I would be delighted if we signed him. I see no reason why we should not aswell. Free transfer, proven in the Premier League and worked with Harry for a number of years at Wet Sham. If we were to sign Joe Cole and the Palermo duo, I feel we will have a squad capable enough to do well in the Champions League and sustain or improve our position in the Premier League. Maybe even snap up Ashley Young in a swap deal for David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas, two players who I feel should definately leave.

Speaking of players leaving, if Robbie Keane, David Bentley, Jamie O'Hara and Jermaine Jenas left the gates of White Hart Lane never to return again only when their new team is visting on an away day, I would be quite happy. I feel these players have been given sufficent time to prove themselves and for me they have not done so. Robbie Keane was once a legend at the Lane, but it is sad to say that I do not feel he is the same player he was a few years ago. He was not part of our team for the majority of last season and he was not missed. And David Bentley and Jermain Jenas are too inconsistent. They can put in man of the match shifts for us but then in most other games, become non existent. I feel that we can get good money for these players, maybe even a swap deal for Ashley Young, as Villa showed their interest in some of these players before. I believe that only these players should be sold as most of the players who played last season performed very well, and with a few more signings we can improve even more.

So, if we offloaded a few players whose time is up at the Lane and invested in two or three top quality players, not forgetting we allready have the Brazillian Sandro, get Harry on a new long term contract, I believe that we can have another fantastic season. With the Champions League on the horizon, the hope of improving in the Premier League and a new stadium hopefully not too far away, the future looks bright for Tottenham, and long may it continue.
