After a comfortable victory over Everton in midweek, Tottenham plunged themselves into the media spotlight and went into the game aware that a win would see them draw level on points with at least one Manchester side at the summit of the Premier League.
Spurs started slowly however, lacking their usual verve and energy. Wolves would have gone into the game with confidence having won and drawn on their last two visits to White Hart Lane, and may have been encouraged in an opening spell where many of Spurs efforts, including three from midfield maestro Modric, failed to find the target. For 20 minutes the Lilywhites were unable to break down an obdurate side who set out to frustrate them, and a controversially-awarded corner then led to an opening goal against the run of play. Johnson’s header was hacked away by a combination of Modric's boot and Friedel's palm, but front-man Fletcher was quick to see the follow-up opportunity and steered home. Tottenham pressed and appeared to employ Assou-Ekotto high on the left-wing with Bale inside for long periods. This almost led to an equaliser, Bale’s shot from inside the box saved by Hennessey, and a volleyed cross from the Cameroon left-back eventually steered in by Adebayor, only for the linesman to flag the Togolese forward offside.
Wolves were not overly ambitious but their industry led to rare opportunities to attack, and Edwards missed the target after good work from Jarvis on the left-hand side.
Spurs began the second half much more brightly, although their ambition led to another counter attacking chance for the visitors, Frimpong’s volley saved by Friedel. Redknapp’s side soon found their equaliser, Bale teeing up Modric on the edge of the box and his drilled shot flying through a host of players and squirming in under the keeper.
Lightning almost struck twice to give Spurs the lead, but this time the Welshman saved from Modric and Lennon’s rebound was also kept out. The hosts looked like they would go on to win the game but could not turn possession into penetration, while on the rare occasions they got in behind the Wolves defence, crosses from Ekotto and Walker were wasted by Bale and Adebayor respectively.
Defoe was introduced for Lennon, the winger’s second game in a week on return from injury probably forcing the Tottenham boss’ hand. The England striker almost made an immediate impact but his shot was saved by Hennessey’s legs. For the remainder of the game, Spurs’ attempts to attack in central areas were impeded by a battling Wolves side, led by the superb Johnson in defence.
Tottenham were unable to produce a final onslaught and Wolves held firm, completing the task they had planned. Spurs went home disappointed with only a point but will look to make amends next weekend when they play leader Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
