Not sure why we're THAT worried about City...

Chairman

and to a lesser extent Sunderland, Pompey, etc.

We have spent so much money in the last few years that surely it's about transfer market nous rather than how much money you've got.

Now I know this will be brought up so I'll get there first:

Wages is another issue, and a club like City will trump us with ludicrous offers, but it's more about management and player selection than how much money you can throw around, is it not? For example, would we have even wanted RSC or Bellamy? If we are cleverer in the market and go for different players (one could say ie Wenger) then you don't have to compete with them for wages. And in the case of Crouch, he'd seemingly rather join us on lower wages than go to Sunderland for 90k a week.

Back to the main point though...

Some people clearly want Levy out and a sugar daddy in, claiming 'that it's the only way we can compete' or words to that effect ... but surely, and please tell me if I'm wrong... if the sugar daddy has the wrong man at the helm, does it make any difference?

Again, Wenger as an example, and maybe not a good one if you believe, like me, that the man is the best manager in the world, but still... if money mattered that much, and the only way forward was a billionaire owner... then how do a skint Arsenal keep coming fourth? Ok they've not won much, but they are still keeping themselves in the mix at the top of European football, and their football's not bad at times either...

At the end of the day we have bought abysmally over the past few years, (Kaboul 8 mil, Bentley 15 max, Bent 16 max, etc...) but if we'd have had someone else instead of Comolli we'd have arguably had a squad capable of coming 4th, and things would have changed for us financially and in terms of our draw to top players because of CL qualification.

Some may think we missed our chance now that City have millions and will be fighting for 4th, leaving us 6th at best, but as Moyes has shown, if you get a good group together playing in an organised, hard-working fashion, with everyone knowing their job in the system, you can achieve quite a lot. We arguably have better players than them so the challenge IMO is for Redknapp to better them by giving us the grit and understanding as a team and putting it alongside the quality we already have.

I think we are a way off the top 4, with Arsenal being the weakest of the 4, but when Wenger goes, a gap will appear.

I'd suggest it would be the best manager that then grabs that 4th spot, not necessarily the team with the most dosh, and as a result, I'd say instead of praying for a sugar daddy, we pray that Redknapp has the qualities to keep improving us, and then when he goes in probably 2/3 years time, we make the right choice in terms of his successor.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's the man in charge that makes you a successful football club, not the money the chairman has to offer.

I don't think Redknapp is anywhere near Wenger of course, but he deserves to be backed after last season, and hopefully his obvious abilities in certain aspects can shine through at the best club he's ever worked at. And then after him... well, let's just hope we pick the right guy.
