Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea: John Terry, your Mum's a thief.

I don’t think it should ever been underestimated how much support the players of Spurs get from their fans and the impact it has on both sets of players. Never has there been a more stark reminder than the last three matches that Spurs have participated in.

On Sunday the 11th of April the rank and file of Tottenham’s support turned up at Wembley and stayed mute for the most part. Expecting an easy win and safe passage through to the FA Cup final the fans awaited a performance from their team before hailing them in song. It never happened and the West End of Wembley was bathed in stoic silence for two hours. A contrast as stark as black and white to what White Hart Lane was like on Wednesday the 14th of April. Before the players had even set foot on the lush grass at The Lane the support was vociferous. Consequently the players rose (see what I did there?) to the occasion and a glorious win was recorded.

But could the trick be repeated a scant three days later or would it be ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’? I think we have our answer.

The support was once again magnificent and the performance on the pitch bettered the performance of Wednesday night. The two villains of the piece this time were to be John Terry and Drogba. Spurs started like a train and the support followed. Little ditties like, “Terry, You’re a cunt”, “Terry, you let you’re country down”, “Terry, You let you’re children down”, and (and by far the most popular) “John Terry, your Mum’s a thief” seemed to have a real impact. Terry lunged in to one unadvisable challenge after another until he finally crumbled and gave away the penalty for the first goal.

Drogba was also getting stick. So much so that he decided, too late in the day, that at half time he had had enough. Feigning injury Drogba tried to slink off back to the dressing room out of the line of fire not realising that Chelsea had used up all their substitutes. Tough shit Didier. The abuse continued, interspersed nicely with lots of pro Spurs songs, and it paid dividends when Terry finally lost his rag with two poor challenges in the space of three minutes and consequently was sent packing. Drogba looked on at his Captain’s departure wistfully. In response the Chelsea supporters had serenaded their heroes with two rounds of “Que sera sera” (which in truth were directed at the Spurs contingent rather than at their team) and the one rendition of that tired old tune “One man went to mow” and even that was half hearted. By the 70th minute they were streaming for the exits and by the 80th minute they hardly had enough supporters left to provide a duet.

As the South corner of White Hart Lane become more barren the louder the loyal Spurs support got. Spurred on by this (see, I did it again. I really should be writing for the Star) Tottenham really should have wrapped up the match by a margin or four or five goals. Instead we had to settle for the 2-1 win as Lampard stroked home a cross which was seen by one Chelsea supporter and possibly his dog, Spot.

Yesterday was the perfect marrying up of a great performance on the pitch and a great one off it by the support.

So next time you’re at the Lane (or at an away venue for that matter) don’t hesitate to join in the songs regardless whether the opposition is Chelsea, Arsenal, Hull or Stoke. It really does make a difference. Just ask John Terry if you don’t believe me.
