Highlight: Finally appearing in the Champions League where he belongs.
Lowlight: Hardly playing this season due to injury.
Average We Are Tottenham Match Rating: 6.50/10
There’s not really any point in doing a report for Ledley King; firstly because everyone knows what he’s about, secondly because he’s only played seven times this season, and thirdly because he plays consistently well in just about every game he plays. He is one of the most talented defenders that this country has ever produced, and it his heartbreaking that injuries have blighted his career so significantly.
What is worth discussing however, is where he goes from here and what he can offer for the remainder of the season. I saw a headline the other day which read: ‘King to see specialist’... which usually means a lengthy lay-off due to a mystery injury. Let’s just hope he’s back soon.
There is an argument that we should just give up on Ledley and put our faith in one of our younger centre-halves, which is brutal but you can see the logic in it. If he was just a good player, he wouldn’t keep walking straight into the first team whenever his body allows it, but he isn’t just a good player... he is a great player. Not only is he a great player, but he has the ability to play to the best of his ability without playing a few games to get himself up to speed. He is a freak, in the nicest possible way. That is why he is worth sticking with in my opinion.
I heard a sports scientist talking about the nature of Ledley’s knee problems earlier in the season, and he was of the opinion that if injuries like his are handled properly, he can play on for as long as he likes. Whilst that is encouraging, it would appear that his lack of match time – not to mention the fact that all he can do to keep fit is cycle and swim – means that he is liable to sustain injuries unrelated to his knee injury, such as pulled muscles and strains. It is for this reason that it must be tempting for the management to opt for a younger, fitter player who has more to offer long-term. But it would appear that Harry sees the value of having a player like King in the team, and will probably keep picking him until his knee actually drops off. Get well soon Ledley.
