Now that the season is in full-swing, I thought I'd offer a few recommendations to fellow podcast users. There's lots of good stuff out there which can be accessed for free via the touch of a button. If I've missed any podcasts which you think are worthy of mention, just pop them in our podcast thread. Let's start with the professional ones, in no particular order... The Game Podcast (Times) Gabriele Marcotti hosts a weekly (often bi-weekly) show with usually three journos or ex-players such as Tony Cascarino and Stuart Robson. The Football Weekly Podcast (Guardian) The superb James Richardson (formerly of Channel 4's Serie A programme) hosts this twice-weekly show and is joined by some of the very best football journalists around... and Barry Glendenning. It would be the best professional football podcast around if it weren't for Glendenning, but contributions from the likes of Rafael Honigstein, Fernando Duarte, Philipe Auclair and assorted others just about make up for it. Glendenning is away on Monday, so this would be a good time to start listening.
The Spurs Show Phil Cornwell (yes, the guy from I'm Alan Partridge) hosts a weekly show dedicated to all things Spurs. They often have some top notch guests on there, like Ricky Villa, Ossie Ardiles, Cliff Jones, Morris Keston and Paul Whitehouse to name a few. Apart from Phil's dodgy Arry impression, it's a good listen. 5 Live Football Daily (BBC) A daily collection of highlights from all of 5 Live's football coverage. Lots of good guests and interviews on this one. Well worth a download. 606 Football Phone-in (BBC) Usually out on Saturday and Sunday nights, this is a chance to listen to the post-match phone-ins usually hosted by either Mark Chapman or Darren Fletcher, who both seem like decent blokes. Robbie Savage usually co-hosts one of them, Jason Roberts has started hosting on Saturdays though. Even though most of the people who ring in sound like they are phoning from the Happy Foundation, it is quite amusing... especially when the Goons have lost that day. Beyond The Pitch An American podcast which has some cracking interviews. Their guests have included Rio Ferdinand, Romelu Lukaku, Michael Essien, Vinnie Jones, Martin Jol, Jermaine Jenas, Tim Sherwood, Gabriele Marcotti, Andrew Jennings, Simon Kjaer, Henrik Larsson, Petr Cech,Trevor Brooking,The Swiss Ramble guy, Peter Schmeichel... and many more. One of the guys that hosts it has an annoying habit of breathing heavily into his microphone, sounds like Darth Vader. But apart from that, it's worth subscribing to. Inside Tottenham Hotspur (BBC) This is a weekly show made by Radio London, which has interviews with Harry and the players and does a recap of the previous week's action. Short and sweet. Chappers' Premier League Podcast This one doesn't seem to have started yet this season, but if it does it's worth downloading. Mark Chapman hosts and is joined by Kevin Day, Roy Meredith and Graham Poll. Whilst Poll can be a bit of a cunt on it, he does offer some insight into refereeing decisions. They just go over the previous weekend's games and dissect them. Pretty decent. TEAMtalk Podcast This one's usually quite far down the list on my iPod, but if you finish all the other ones, it kills half an hour. And now for the fan-made ones... The Fighting Cock Podcast This one is only 5 episodes old, but seems to really be gathering pace. Hosted by Flav, Spooky, Ricky, tehTrunk and Dan (who can all be found on Twitter), this is turning into a really good podcast and is a must for all Spurs fans who own an iPod. I think the reason it works so well is because they are real Spurs fans who attend matches AND more importantly, they succeed where certain other fan-made podcasts fail, in that they are smart guys who know football. They are also not afraid to break the mould and do brave things like criticise Michael Dawson when he plays badly! Regular sections such as 'Prick of the Week' and 'Nan-alysis' are sure to please. Cock On Ball – The Unofficial Tottenham Fancast This one is just two guys talking about Spurs, but 99 times out of 100 I find myself agreeing with the things they say. Unfortunately, this one only really comes out every now and again. Worth subscribing to though. There are others out there which aren't really my cup of tea, but I'm not going to slag them off for the sake of it. Whilst we're on the subject of podcasts, I might as well recommend some non-footballing ones, let's start with some comedy...
The Peacock & Gamble Podcast Hosted by Ray Peacock and Ed Gamble, who are both professional stand-up comedians. This is just two intelligent guys acting dumb but in an ironic and funny way. It is pretty offensive and certainly not for those people who make a habit out of being morally outraged. There's no point starting this podcast with the latest episode as it just won't make any sense. So you need to start from episode 1, which is still available on iTunes. This is laugh out loud funny. The Ricky Gervais Podcast A pretty obvious one, but worth putting in here. The man is a comedy genius, pure and simple. Adam & Joe (BBC) Highlights of Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish's Saturday morning 6 Music show. They've stopped doing their latest run, but have promised to come back in the near future. This is the thinking man's comedy podcast. Jim Jefferies & Eddie Ifft Talk Shit About 99.86% of the World's population would find this podcast too offensive to listen to, but luckily I am in the 0.14% who don't. As the title says, they talk shit. But it can be pretty funny. Again, you'll need to start from the beginning or there's no point. Episode 3 is amazing. And for those of you like me who follow cricket... Test Match Special (BBC) Test Match Sofa The Switch Hit Cricket Show (ESPN Cricinfo) Bowl at Boycs (ESPN Cricinfo) ECB Cricket Podcast ICC Cricket World Radio Show And some others... The Infinite Monkey Cage (BBC) Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews (BBC) The Film Programme (BBC) Desert Island Discs (BBC) As you can see, you'll never catch me moaning about the BBC. Anyway, all of those can be downloaded for free from iTunes. Enjoy. -------------------------------------------------------------- Follow me on Twitter - @Mike___Hunt Why not come and join in the discussion on WeAreTottenham.net by registering here?
